SD-WAN

The future of wide area networking is software-defined

Modern SD-WAN solutions

for companies in Austria

Expensive and complex MPLS (multiprotocol label switching) Lines between locations are no longer up to date. A software-defined WAN (SD-WAN) creates better and more flexible connectivity, reduces costs, offers integrated security features and central management. Challenges such as the high-performance connection of remote employees, applications in different cloud environments, trouble shooting in real time and short-term expansions are easily implemented.

The extension of this idea is described under the term SASE (Secure Access Service Edge) and extends the SD-WAN approach with SaaS features such as Web firewalls, secure web gateways, cloud access security brokers, endpoint security and zero-trust network access.

Software-defined WAN (SD-WAN)
for flexible and future-proof networks

An SD-WAN approach means using the Internet or cloud-native private networks instead of proprietary hardware. An SD-WAN thus decouples the network from the management layer and separates the traffic management and monitoring functions from the hardware. This allows companies to deploy networks more flexibly and agilely, to control traffic in a targeted manner and to deploy network services centrally on the WAN.

Such solutions are used especially for connecting data centers, branch offices or subsidiaries at the WAN edge. This allows advantages such as dynamic path selection from existing technologies such as 4G/5G, LTE or MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) to be used, which have the same Quality of Service (QoS) and higher bandwidths at lower costs.

Reasons for SD-WAN

The increased use of Cloud applications leads to separation of users, applications and data and access via Internet connections.

The central management and segmentation of the traffic enables higher security level for users, devices and applications.

The huge costs and complexity and low flexibility of existing MPLS Networks call for new approaches to connectivity.

Modern systems require higher Bandwidths for real-time applications and rapid response to new requirements.

The Guide to Moving to an SD-WAN

Modern SD-WAN solutions
with definite advantages

Modern SD-WAN solutions have distinct advantages over traditional MPLS connectivity. This is primarily because today's traffic, which consists of advanced web applications and complex workflows, requires a more flexible and dynamic architecture for connectivity than traditional static MPLS connections can provide.

In the adjacent table you will find the main differences between the technologies on important topics.

What are the key benefits of SD-WAN and SASE?

Frequently asked questions about SD-WAN

SD-WAN can be defined as a software-based solution for wide area networks. It is designed to deliver far better and more flexible connectivity at lower cost and complexity than traditional solutions.

MPLS stands for Multiprotocol Label Switching. It is a method that has been used for a long time to transmit data connection-oriented in connectionless networks. Signaling is used to determine which path the packet will take before it is sent.

The intelligent use of different transmission technologies makes the connection more resilient and additionally highly available. This means that failures can be better avoided.

The large number of devices, users and protocols increases the complexity in networks. An SD-WAN leverages automation, security component integration, centralized management, and AI integration to simplify connectivity in mixed environments (on-premises, hybrid networks, and multiple cloud environments).

Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) is an approach that combines networking and security capabilities with WAN capabilities. SASE converges SD-WAN and network security services, including next-generation firewall (NGFW), secure web gateway (SWG), zero-trust network access (ZTNA), and cloud access security brokers (CASB), into a single service model.

SD WAN - FAQ

Components of a SASE Model
Focus on secure access

Advanced WAN networking features such as dynamic path selection, self-healing WAN capabilities, support for demanding high-performance applications, and consistent user experience are at the core of a SASE solution.

The zero-trust approach to network access is to authenticate users to applications.

Modern firewalling technologies such as NGFW (Next Generation Firewalls) or FWaaS (Firewall as a Service) allow flexibility and enable consistent security policies for users located outside the network.

A Secure Web Gateway is designed to protect users and devices from online security threats by enforcing Internet security and compliance policies and filtering out malicious Internet traffic.

The Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB) enables organizations to maintain control of their SaaS applications by eliminating shadow IT and guaranteeing secure access.
